ALPHONSE MUCHA (1866-1939) [CALENDAR.] 1903.
20x81/2 inches.
Condition A-: discoloration in margins and image; cropped.
In many ways Mucha can be considered the father of the calendar girl, if not the father of pin-up girls themselves. Due to the popularity of his work, many of his decorative panels were turned into calendars. This copy, dated 1903, has had the calendar page removed from the bottom. It is classical textbook Mucha vertical composition, with a young girl seated within a circle that serves to draw attention to her face. Delicately rendered in Mucha's refined style, the piece is unusually attractive due to the palette of purple, blue and pink, colors that were very rarely used by Mucha. Rennert/Weill 42.
